Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The incumbent serves as a Manager in ESSR and is a uniformed Assistant Fire Marshal. This is a management level position responsible for supervision of professional exempt and contingent employees. The position provides management and supervision of a range of daily fire marshal operations with emphasis on the fire inspection, training/education, fire drills, and records management programs.

This position is subject to the Trustworthy and Reliability program and requirements for the NRC Trustworthy and Reliable Increased Controls Orders, including an NRC FBI fingerprint and background check as part of the Trustworthy and Reliability program.

This position is serves in an on-call rotation requiring 24/7 response during the on-call period.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.

Experience:
5 years of progressively responsible experience in fire protection or directly related fire service experience with 3 years at the supervisory level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must have expert knowledge of federal/State/local fire safety and codes. standards, and regulations, and principles/practices related to recognition, prevention, control, analysis, and investigation of fires and fire hazards.
  • Ability to speak in public and communicate effectively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to successfully apply appropriate educational methods and strategies.
  • Ability to understand construction drawings and specifications and to communicate with architects, engineers, project managers and other construction and planning professionals.
  • Must have skill in oral/written communication, interpretation of technical reports and interpretation of technical drawings.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.

Certification as a fire inspector, Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
Must qualify to be appointed, and maintain appointment, as Special Assistant State Fire Marshal

Physical Demands

Physical Demands:
The incumbent may be subjected to periods of stress such as testimony in court or public hearings; may be subjected to entering buildings that have been on fire or that contain hazardous materials, may have to climb steps and carry equipment, may have to work at construction sites. The incumbent is subject to working nights, weekends, and holidays and in adverse weather conditions when necessary, Twenty-four hour on-call response capability is required.
